Men’s Tennis Splits Regular Season Finale Doubleheader in Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – The Creighton men's tennis team split a doubleheader with Saint Louis and Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale in St. Louis, Mo.
The Bluejays finished the regular season with a 14-10 overall record, while Saint Louis fell to 1-12 overall and the Bears improving to 8-7 on the season.
Match 1: Creighton 4, Saint Louis 0
Creighton continued its doubles success on Sunday morning, capturing victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to clinch the doubles point for the 18th time this season.
Senior Alejandro Gandini and junior Yuma Daijima teamed up for a 6-2 victory on the No. 2 doubles courts, before juniors Zachary Kuo and Kirtan Patel combined for a 6-4 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays carried their early momentum into singles play, earning straight set victories on the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles courts to clinch the overall dual.
Gandini cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets win over Andres Castellanos at the top singles position, before Kuo earned an identical 6-3, 6-2 win on the No. 4 singles court to give CU a 3-0 lead. Freshman Rocky McKenzie would then clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph at the No. 5 singles spot.
Match 2: Washington U 4, Creighton 0
The second match of the day got away from the Bluejays as Washington University in St. Louis downed the Jays, 4-0.
The Bears won a tight, back-and-forth doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Stefan Hester and Pato Garcia Muriel took down McKenzie and Ethan Neil, 6-4, on the No. 1 doubles court, before Gandini and Daijima battled out a 7-5 victory on court No. 2 to level things up at one-match apiece. Wash U's Eric Kuo and Colin Scruggs then claimed a 7-5 victory on the No. 3 doubles court, giving the Bears a 1-0 advantage.
Wash U continued to pressure the Bluejays down the stretch, capturing straight set wins at the top three singles positions to earn the 4-0 sweep.
The Bluejays return to the courts next week for the start of the BIG EAST Championships Presented by Jeep in Cayce, South Carolina.
