Servais Claims 13 of Final 16 games With Huskers
The at-bat of the game came in the third inning as Nebraska brought in Gavin Blachowicz to face Bluejay shortstop North. A 12-pitch battle ensued, featuring eight foul balls all occurring after North went down 0-2 to start the at-bat. North eventually laced a two-run single to center to put Creighton in front.
The Bluejays tacked on four runs in the fourth with the benefit of three walks, a hit batter, an error, a sac fly and finally another RBI single from North to give Creighton a 6-0 advantage.
Nebraska responded with a pair of runs on two singles, a walk and a hit batter in the fifth, then got a solo home run from Joshua Overbeek to cut Creighton's lead in half to 6-3. The Huskers closed within 6-4 on another solo home run in the eighth, this one coming from Gabe Swansen.
The Jays' offense went back to work in the ninth as Nolan Sailors laced a leadoff double down the left field line, then North reached a double lost in the lights along the right field line. One out later Scherrman lined a two-run single past the drawn in Nebraska infield to push the Bluejay lead back to four at 8-4.
Nebraska, however, refused to go quietly in the bottom of the ninth. The Huskers first five hitters reached safely on an error, three singles and a walk. Bluejay closer Garrett Langrell recovered to induce a sac fly to make it 8-7, then notched back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the win!
Creighton starter Ian Koosman moved to 6-3 with the victory, holding Nebraska scoreless for three innings. Nebraska starter Will Walsh took the loss (4-7), allowing two runs on two hits in 2.2 innings. Langrell picked up his 10th save of the season by getting the final four outs of the contest.
North and Will MacLean guided the Creighton offense with three and two hits respectively.
The final home series of head coach Ed Servais' career begins on Friday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m as the Bluejays host Xavier. Prior to the game former Bluejay Chris Gradoville will be honored. Gradoville (2004-07) was tragically killed in September of 2021, while he was serving as the Director of Baseball Operations.
