Softball Drops Two on Day Two of Colorado Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Creighton softball team dropped a pair of contests to Northern Colorado and Colorado State on Saturday during the second day of the Colorado Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. The Bluejays suffered a 3-0 setback to Northern Colorado to open the day, before falling to host Colorado State, 6-2, in the night cap.
With the pair of losses, Creighton fell to 6-13 on the season.
GAME 1: Northern Colorado 3, Creighton 0
In game one, Northern Colorado scored two runs in the first, one in the sixth and used a complete-game shutout from Anna Wilming to secure the 3-0 victory over the Bluejays.
Northern Colorado came out swinging, plating two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Amailee Morales opened the day with her team-leading eighth double of the season and scored two batters later as Ella Gonzales lined an RBI single through the left side to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Katie Walling followed with an RBI triple into the right center field gap to push the Bears advantage to 2-0.
Both teams would lock in defensively over the next five innings until Northern Colorado added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. Gonzales led off the frame with a walk and Walling followed with a single to left center, before Krista Francia laced an RBI single into the left center field gap to extend the Bears lead out to 3-0.
Barnard and West recorded the Bluejays only two hits in the contest, while Audrey Gilman suffered the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks in the complete-game effort.
GAME 2: Colorado State 6, Creighton 2
In game two, Colorado State broke open a scoreless battle with five runs in the third and added one more in the fourth to claim a 6-2 victory.
Pitching dominated early as both starters opened the game with back-to-back scoreless frames.
The Rams, however, broke the scoreless tie in the third using back-to-back RBI singles from Bradie Poteet-Herrera and Clarissa Castillo to grab a 2-0 lead. Following a popout to second, Madi Eslinger delivered an RBI single to right before Autumn Rutherford laced a two-run single off the centerfield wall to give the Rams a 5-0 edge.
Creighton cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth as Keegan Mayhue singled to left and scored on an RBI triple from Tara Vandewater. Colorado State, however, answered with an RBI double to right by Kyra Smith to push the advantage back out to 6-1 in the bottom half of the frame.
The Bluejays added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Barnard, but it wasn't enough as the Rams closed out the 6-2 victory.
Barnard paced the Bluejays with three hits and an RBI, while Brooklyn Patchen fell to 2-5 on the year, allowing five runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Creighton will wrap up play at the Colorado Classic on Sunday with a rematch against Colorado State at 12 p.m. CT.
