Baton Rouge, La. -- After getting out to an early 4-1 lead, Creighton Baseball fell at #13 LSU in its first midweek game of the season on Tuesday, March 18.
The loss dropped Creighton to 5-8 on the season, while LSU climbed to 13-5.
After LSU pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Creighton responded with two in the top of the second. Ben North got the Bluejays rolling with a single up the middle and moved to second on a failed pickoff. Connor Capece made the error hurt with an RBI single up the middle, then immediately took second via a wild pitch. Capece scored later in the frame on a sac fly from Lew Rice.
Creighton extended its lead in the third as Teddy Deters and North drew walks, then Capece was hit by a pitch. Isaac Wachsmann followed with a two-run single to make it 4-1.
LSU plated its second unearned run of the game in the fourth, but reliever Shane Curtin closed the door with another ground ball to move the contest to the fifth.Â
The Tigers took advantage of a little wildness from Curtin in the fifth as he loaded the bags on two hit batters and a single. Joe Hauser came on from the bullpen, but was greeted by a grand slam from LSU's Omar Serna Jr. to give the Tigers a 6-4 edge.
LSU tacked on two more in the eighth as Jake Brown launched his ninth home run of the season.
Curtin took the loss, allowing three runs on one hit and two hit batters in one-third of an inning to fall to 0-2. LSU reliever Deven Sheerin earned the win (1-0) with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Santiago Garcia picked up his first save with 2.2 innings of scoreless ball.
The Bluejays will remain in Louisiana to play a three-game series with Tulane beginning on Friday, March 13 at 6:30 pm.
