Omaha, Neb. -- Lew Rice delivered an emphatic ending to Creighton's 6-5 win over Butler on Saturday, April 25 as the South Carolina native launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Bulldogs.
The win lifted Creighton to 24-16 on the season and 9-2 in BIG EAST action. Butler, meanwhile, fell to 15-27 overall and 5-6 in conference contests.
After posting a 6-0 in the series opener, Creighton followed the same script by taking the lead in the second. Connor Capece set the table with a one-out double to right, then Teddy Deters laced an RBI single to left. Chris Baillargeon continued the hit party with a double to right-center to put Bluejays on second and third. Rocco Gump plated Deters with a productive out to the right side, giving Creighton a 2-0 edge.
The Bluejays added a run in the third on a single, two walks and a hit batter, pushing their lead to 3-0.
Butler broke through with three runs in the sixth as Charlie Schlebler belted a 2-2 pitch into the stands in right-center.
Creighton reclaimed the lead in the bottom half as Gump singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a bunt single by Rice that was thrown down the right field line.
In the top of the eighth the Bulldogs claimed their first lead of the series as Schlebler poked a two-run bloop single into left field off Bluejay closer Matt Goldenbaum.
The final frame saw Gump set the table once more with a single up the middle and Nick Venteicher put down his second consecutive sac bunt. Rice did the rest launching the game winning shot off the right field foul pole. It was Rice's second home run of the season and his second walk off homer.Â
The Bluejays and Bulldogs have moved the series finale up to an 11:00 am start to avoid weather.
