STORRS, Conn. – The Creighton softball team officially locked up their spot in the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament and shattered three program single season records in an historic 7-5 victory over UConn on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
The victory moved Creighton to 27-22 on the season and into sole possession of second place in the BIG EAST standings with a 15-5 mark in league play. UConn, meanwhile, fell to 24-25 overall and to 14-6 in BIG EAST play.
With the seven runs scored in the top of the second inning, the Bluejays set a program record for runs scored in a single season with 325 runs scored, breaking the previous mark of 321 runs set last spring. In addition, the Jays also recorded five RBI this afternoon, pushing its season total to 297 RBI and breaking the previous school record of 292 RBI set in 2025. Furthermore, with a leadoff double from freshman Chiqui Vazquez in the seventh, Creighton also set a new single season school record with their 80th double of the season, passing previous school record on 79 doubles in 1993.
Creighton's torrid offense got going early as the Bluejays scored all seven of their runs on five hits, two hit batters, a walk and two UConn errors in the top of the second inning. Junior Kaelan Schultz set the table with a leadoff single, before the Jays took advantage of a throwing error by the UConn second baseman to put runners on first and second with no one away. Pinch runner Emma Bailey and sophomore Tara Vandewater would then come in to score the first runs of the game on a wild pitch and a throwing error from the Huskies catcher to give the Jays a 2-0 lead.
CU would follow up by loading the bases on a walk to Keegan Mayhue and hit-by-pitches from Erika Perez and Ashten Pierson, before three straight RBI singles from Zoey Greenwood (Infield RBI single), Avery Barnard (two-run RBI single to left) and Lily West (RBI single to left) put the Jays out in front 6-0. Barnard and West would then advance to second and third on a wild pitch and scored one-pitch later on a sacrifice fly to deep center from Schultz to push Creighton's advantage to 7-0.
UConn would answer right away with a solo home run from Emma Willers in the bottom half of the second and get a three-run homer from Kaitlyn Breslin in the home half of the third to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Following a scoreless fourth, Breslin cracked her second home run of the game to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning to trim the Bluejays lead to 7-5.
Freshman starter Audrey Gilman, however, was too much to handle as she retired the final six UConn batters to close out the 7-5 victory for the Jays.
Gilman collected the victory (14-8), improving to 9-0 in BIG EAST play while recording a season-high seven strikeouts in her ninth complete-game effort of the season. UConn's Sydnee Koosh took the loss (5-6), allowing five runs on just one hit, a walk and two hit batters in 1.1 innings of work.
Offensively, the Bluejays got four hits from the top four batters in the batting order with Barnard leading the way with two RBI. Vazquez also collected the first double of her Bluejay career in the seventh to set Creighton's single season program record with their 80th double of the season.
The Bluejays and Huskies will wrap up the series on Sunday morning with the rubber match set for 11 a.m. CT in Storrs, Conn.
