Cincinnati, Ohio -- Playing in the home of the Cincinnati Reds, Great American Ballpark, Teddy Deters turned a childhood dream into reality hitting the go ahead home run against his former team to lift Creighton Baseball to a 5-2 win over Xavier on Thursday, May 14.
The win moved Creighton to 29-22 on the season and 13-6 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 25-28 overall and 13-6 in conference contests.
Creighton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Ben North paid off a pair of walks with a two-out RBI single to center.Â
The Bluejays held the lead into the fifth, when a leadoff double from Musketeer Tanner Thomas led to a one-out RBI single from Jorge Valdes to knot the game at 1-1.
Still tied as the game moved to the seventh, a leadoff walk by Capece and an infield single from Deters set the table for head coach Mark Kingston to use a little small ball. Chris Baillargeon sacrificed the runners to second and third, then Nick Venteicher lifted a sac fly to right.
Xavier responded quickly with a hit batter, a single and an RBI grounder from Donovan Canterberry, but Creighton reliever Joe Hauser gave the Jays lift by stranding three Musketeers as he struck out Xavier catcher Jonathan Fitz.
After the Musketeers put runners at second and third with no one out in the third, Hauser delivered another Herculean effort with a strikeout, a fielder's choice to third and another strikeout to set the stage for Deters.
Creighton's ninth inning began with Nate McHugh just missing a home run of his own, rocketing a double off the wall in left. After a sacrifice from Connor Capece sent pinch runner Joe Washburn to third, Deters smashed a 1-1 pitch into the fifth row in left to defeat his former Xavier teammates.
Hauser earned the win (1-0) with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Matt Goldenbaum collected his third save as he tossed allowed just one hit in the ninth. Xavier reliever Michael Murphy took the loss (3-1), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings.
Deters closed the contest going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
The Bluejays and Musketeers continue their three-game series on Friday, May 15 at 1:00 pm (CT).
