Assistant coach Brian Fish is in his eighth year at Creighton, and 12th overall on the bench with Dana Altman.
Fish is in his second tour of duty at Creighton. He was an original member of Altman’s first staff at Creighton, then returned to Omaha in the summer of 2004 to rejoin the Jays after eight years at TCU and San Diego.
Fish is heavily involved in Creighton’s recruiting efforts, a role he has handled with tremendous success at every turn. It’s little surprise that Creighton’s last few recruiting classes have been considered among the league’s best.
He also works closely with the Bluejay post players and aids in game preparation and scouting.
Dating to his playing days at Western Kentucky and Marshall, Fish has been associated with six programs as a player or coach. Remarkably, all six have reached the NCAA Tournament.
Before returning to Omaha, Fish had spent the previous eight seasons at TCU and San Diego.
Fish spent the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons at the University of San Diego, where he worked for Brad Holland. After helping San Diego to the 2002-03 NCAA Tournament, Fish was promoted to associate head coach for the 2003-04 campaign.
Prior to San Diego, Fish was on Billy Tubbs’ staff at TCU as an assistant coach. At TCU, Fish served as recruiting coordinator and oversaw academics for the basketball team. In his six years at the school, TCU made three postseason appearances and compiled an overall record of 125-68.Â
Â
Fish and Altman first worked together during the 1989-90 season, when the two were at Marshall. Fish was breaking into coaching as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, while Altman earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year plaudits in his lone year with the Thundering Herd.
Two years after Altman went to Kansas State, Fish rejoined his mentor in Manhattan as a video/film coordinator. Paired together again, Altman and his staff earned 1993 Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year accolades.
When Altman moved to Creighton prior to the 1994-95 season, Fish remained loyal and served in the same capacity for the Bluejays. Together, they helped lay the groundwork for Creighton’s active run of 12 straight postseason appearances.
A native of Seymour, Ind., Fish played two seasons for Clem Haskins at Western Kentucky before transferring to play at Marshall. Fish earned a degree in sport management from Marshall in 1989 before becoming a graduate assistant there.
In the spring of 2009, Fish was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary Team along with 16 other former Indiana high school basketball standouts and Hoosier legends, a class that also included Steve Alford, Gregg Popovich and Scott Skiles.
Brian and his wife, Melyssa, have a 22-year old son, Jordan, and 19-year old daughter, Caryssa.
