OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer team scored two goals in each half and held Indiana State to three shots in the match as the Bluejays defeated the Sycamores 4-0 Friday night at Morrison Stadium in Missouri Valley Conference action. Eight Creighton players found their names in the scoring column in the match as the Jays scored a season-high four goals and 12 points. The Bluejays improve to 7-6-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the MVC, moving into a tie for second in the league standings. Indiana State falls to 5-10-0 and 0-3-0 with the loss.
Hingwing opened the scoring at the 4:37 mark in the first half, as she turned around and fired a 10-yarder after a throw-in by senior Sam Russell. The goal was the first of Hingwing's career. The assist was Russell's 17th in her career, moving within one of fifth place on Creighton's career helpers list.
Freshman Emily Orbell gave the Jays a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute, as she took the rebound off an attempted clear by Indiana State following a CU throw-in. Orbell sent a shot to the left post from 12 yards out, but an Indiana State player deflected the ball into the middle of the open net. The goal was Orbell's fourth of the season, the second-best total on the team.
Junior Marcy Gans got into the scoring column in the 74th minute, as she took a great end-line pass from sophomore Kyla Hoskins and finished from eight yards out into the bottom left corner. The goal was Gans' team-leading seventh of the season and the assist by Hoskins was the first of her career and her first point of the season.
After missing on two one-on-one opportunities earlier in the match, senior Toch Ihemelu redeemed herself with the match's final goal in the 85th minute. Ihemelu found herself in space in front of the net and finished from six yards out. Ihemelu was set up after freshman Claire Zach re-directed a crossing pass from the corner by redshirt freshman Tara Bailey. The assist by Zach was the first point of her career, while Bailey's assist was also the first of her career.
Creighton dominated the match in all areas, out-shooting the Sycamores 23-3, while controlling the ball on its half of the field nearly the entire night. The Bluejay defense did not allow a shot to reach goalkeeper Kristen Casey, as all three INSU shot attempts were blocked by CU defenders. With her fifth shutout of the season, Casey moves into a tie for first in the MVC. The shutout was the 11th of Casey's career, etching her name into fifth on the CU career shutouts list. Nine of Casey's 11 shutouts have been at home, setting a new Morrison Stadium career record.
Ihemelu led the team with seven shots in the match, four of which were point-blank opportunities. The goal was Ihemelu's second of the season and 11th of her career. Gans had four shots for the Jays, while Orbell added three as Creighton held a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Creighton will host 11-1-1 Western Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
