OMAHA, Neb. Five straight two-out hits in the top of the seventh inning blew a tight game open as the Nebraska Cornhuskers topped the Creighton softball team 7-2 Thursday night at the CU Sports Complex. Nebraska (30-13) tied its season-high for runs scored as the Bluejays (27-9) suffered consecutive losses for the first time in over a month.
The Huskers scored a run in the first inning without the benefit of a hit, as Whitney Barrett was hit by a pitch and would later come around to score on a bunt by Devin Porter, after the first of three Bluejay errors on the night.
Two more unearned runs crossed the plate for NU in the third inning. With two outs, Crystal Carwile singled up the middle and Porter then reached on an error by Michelle Koch, which put both runners in scoring position. Jamie Waldecker then served a soft line drive to right field to score both runs and put NU up 3-0.
Creighton cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Koch led off with a double off the right center field fence and moved up to third on the first of two infield singles by Jessica Wakasugi. Senior Jamie Reiss extended her hitting streak to eight games with a single through the right side to drive in CU's first run and put two runners on with no outs. But after a sacrifice bunt, NU starter Ashley DeBuhr struck out TJ Eadus and Caitlin Marcano to strand two runners in scoring position.
The Jays stranded a runner on base in the fourth and the fifth, when the frame ended with Wakasugi caught stealing at home and Marcano at the plate. In the sixth inning, a one out solo home run by Jessica German, her fifth of the season, cut the NU lead to 3-2.
After Bluejay hurler Tara Oltman retired the first two hitters in the seventh inning, the Huskers strung together five straight hits, including a three-run home run by Waldecker to put the game out of reach. Prior to the seventh, NU had just three hits through the first six innings. Waldecker finished with five RBI, doubling her season total, while Carwile joined Waldecker with two base hits.
Offensively for the Bluejays, Wakasugi finished 2-for-3 and is now 6-for-9 at the plate in CU's last three games. Five other Bluejays recorded a hit as CU notched seven base knocks in the loss.
In what proved to be a battle of Beatrice (Neb.) High School graduates in the circle, the senior DeBuhr out-dueled the freshman Oltman. DeBuhr struck out 11 Bluejays and allowed two earned runs in improving to 15-6. Oltman (17-4) was roughed up, as the seven runs allowed were the most she's given up in a game in her young career. She allowed four earned runs, as NU became the first team outside of the top 25 to score more than one earned run against the rookie right-hander.
Creighton, which has lost two straight games for the first time since dropping three consecutive at nationally ranked Arizona and Arizona State in early March, will look to return to its winning ways when it plays a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Indiana State this weekend. The Bluejays and Sycamores will face off in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. (CST) on Saturday and conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST).
