CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Four Bluejays drove in two runs and freshman Kylie Hovinga hurled a one-hitter in her collegiate debut as the Creighton softball team defeated Detroit 8-0 in five innings Friday morning at the Corpus Christi Invitational. Junior Sara Loeffelholz went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple in the victory.
Laura Kratochvil got the Bluejays on the board in the top of the second inning when her two-run single put the Jays up 2-0.
A five-run fourth inning blew the game open. Loeffelholz led off the fourth with a double and then scored when Michelle Graner followed with a single. Kratochvil singled again to put two runners on base for Michelle Koch. The Bluejay second baseman ripped a triple down the left field line to plate two runs and give the Jays a 5-0. After Jessica Wakasugi reached base, Jessi Jadlowski then drove in Koch and Wakasugi on a double and the Jays led 7-0 after four innings.
The fifth inning started much the same way the fourth did, as Loeffelholz led off the frame with a triple and scored on a Graner single to give the Jays an eight-run lead.
While the Bluejay offense was abusing the Titan pitching, Hovinga was shutting down the Detroit (0-1) offense. The left-hander carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning and finished the five-inning complete game with just one hit allowed. The Papillion-La Vista graduate struck out four and walked one in picking up the victory.
Loeffelholz finished her first day as a Bluejay, 5-for-6 with a double, home run and two triples. The junior out of Omaha Marian, transferred back to her hometown school this year following two years as a starter at New Mexico.
Graner and Kratochvil each finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Koch was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Jadlowski was the fourth Bluejay with a pair of RBI.
Creighton (1-1) returns to action at the Corpus Christi Invitational on Saturday when it plays North Texas at 11 a.m. and then follows with a game against host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
