TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Creighton scored four runs in the first inning, more than enough for the best pitching staff in Missouri Valley Conference play, as the Bluejay softball team defeated Indiana State 7-0 in the first game of Friday's doubleheader at Price Field. Tara Oltman tossed her seventh shutout of the season, the fifth Bluejay shutout in their first 11 MVC games this season.
The Bluejays used five singles and a pair of Sycamore errors in the opening frame to take a commanding early lead. Michelle Koch, Renae Sinkler and Michelle Graner put together consecutive one-out singles to load the bases for Sara Loeffelholz. The designated player reached on CU's fourth straight single, an infield shot to the shortstop, scoring the game's first run. With two outs the bases still loaded, Jessica Wakasugi reached on an error by pitcher Meagan McCurdy, which allowed two more runs to score. The scoring concluded on an infield RBI single by Liz McKewon, giving the Jays a 4-0 lead before taking the field on defense.
Creighton added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Sinkler led off the frame with a single and was followed by a walk to Graner. Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Loeffelholz. Catcher Lauren Larson singled to drive in a run and put CU up 5-0. The sixth run scored on another ISU error and the Jays concluded their scoring with an infield RBI single off the bat of Jessi Jadlowski.
Meanwhile, Indiana State remained hitless through the first three innings. Meredith Simpson led off the fourth with a single for the Sycamores. The only other ISU hit in the game, came in the seventh inning.
Oltman finished her seventh shutout of the season, allowing just two hits. She walked none and struck out six to move ot 18-6 on the year and within one win of the school career record.
The Bluejays, who lost a non-conference meeting with Indiana State to open the year, knocked around three Sycamore pitchers for 12 hits in the win. Koch finished 3-for-5 in the game, while Sinkler, Larson and McKewon each finished with two hits.
McCurdy (1-4) took the loss for ISU, she lasted just four outs, allowed six hits and four runs, only one of which was earned.
