OMAHA, Neb. - Brittney Neumann's three goals and two assists paced a relentless Creighton attack as the Bluejays ran away with a 8-0 victory over South Dakota Friday evening at Morrison Stadium.
The three goals turned out to be a natural hat trick for Neumann (three consecutive goals) as she scored them all within a span of 9:30 early in the second half. Her two assists amounted to eight points, which is now tied for third on the single game points lists for Creighton, and is a Morrison Stadium record.
The three tallies, which were also the first three of her career, tied the Morrison Stadium record that was set by Marcy Gans on Sept. 21, 2008 against Northern Illinois. Other Morrison records that were broken or tied were team points (21) and team shots on goal (21).
The Bluejays wasted no time putting up their first two goals, scoring them 57 seconds apart at the 4:16 and 5:13 marks. Annemarie Hengel scored her first two goals of the season, the first off assists from Mary Zapapas and Neumann and the second off a rebound from a Neumann shot, to put the Jays up 2-0. Kyla Hoskins also added her first goal of the season at 22:19 of the first. After a scramble for the ball in the box Hoskins came up with it and beat South Dakota keeper Taura Truba low and to the left post for the 3-0 Jay lead. Laura Nasseri capped off the four-goal first half with her first collegiate goal. The freshman from California converted on another Coyote turnover to post an unassisted goal with under 13 minutes remaining in the half.
After taking a 4-0 lead after the first, the Jays came out strong on the foot of Neumann as she scored her first of three 58 seconds into the second half. It was a familiar story as yet another South Dakota turnover deep in their zone turned into an unassisted goal for Neumann.
Goal two for Neumann came just under two minutes later, as she put away a Hoskins rebound for a 6-0 Jay lead. Neumann capped off her hat trick at 55:28, as she took a perfect through ball from Nasseri to the middle of the box and past new USD keeper Jennifer Ogren.
Beth Fyles capped off the rout with her first career goal at 68:39. The sophomore's shot lined off a leaping Ogren's hands and trickled over the goal line to cap the 8-0 Jay victory.
The last time the Bluejays scored eight goals in a match was five years ago when they blanked Youngstown State 8-0 in Ames, Iowa on September 17, 2004.
Creighton out shot South Dakota 35-6, throwing 25 of those shots on goal compared to USD's two. Creighton's defense recorded its third straight shutout of the season, as their scoreless streak now stands at 464:50, dating back to the end of 2008.
Goalkeeper Alicia Montgomery posted 45:00 minutes to her individual scoreless streak, running that to 197:15.
Creighton will continue its non-conference slate Sunday when they head to Kansas City, Mo. to take on UMKC. It will be the Kangaroo's first-ever home game, as they are in their first year of existence. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
