TEMPE, Ariz. - Becca Changstrom carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but was on the wrong side of a 2-0 pitcher's duel in Creighton softball's loss to East Carolina Saturday morning at the Wilson / DeMarini Invitational hosted by Arizona State. Changstrom allowed just three hits in defeat, while the Bluejays managed only three hits off of ECU ace Toni Paisley.
ECU scored in the first inning without the aid of a base hit. Changstrom walked the first two hitters of the game and with one out she hit the Pirate clean-up hitter with a pitch to load the bases. Alex Fieldhouse then ripped a grounder to second base which Jennifer Bohle stopped, but could not get the ball out of her glove, causing her throw to home plate to be late and the first run scored. Changstrom would then induce a ground ball which forced the lead runner out at home and struck out Abby Wynne to limit the damage.
Christa Ruf led off the game with a single and moved to second base on a McKewon sacrifice bunt. Ruf and McKenna Setlik, who walked with two outs, would be stranded in the first inning. Ruf led off the third inning with a bunt single and again moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by McKewon. The junior center fielder would again be left on base, one of six Bluejay runners stranded in the game.
The Pirates (14-5) added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, again doing so without getting a hit. Fieldhouse reached base on a Liz McKewon error to start the inning and her run would later score on a bases loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of ECU pinch-hitter Kai Clark.
Creighton's (7-6) only other hit in the game came with one out in the top of the seventh inning, as Ellen Homan hit a shot down the left field line. Paisley worked around the one out hit, striking out the final two Bluejay hitters.
Paisley (11-3) struck out 10 in the win, moving her season strikeout total to 135 through 97.1 innings pitched.
Changstrom dropped to 4-3 in defeat, as she walked three, hit two batters and struck out seven in six innings of work. Only one of the two runs she allowed were earned.
Through three games at this weekend's tournament, Ruf is now 5-for-10 raising her team-leading average to .350.
Creighton returns to action at Farrington Stadium at 1 pm (CST), when it takes on MVC foe Northern Iowa in a non-conference game.
