TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman McKenna Setlik hit a lead off home run in the top the second inning to give the Creighton softball team a 1-0 lead at ninth-ranked Arizona State Sunday afternoon at Farrington Stadium, but the nationally-ranked Sun Devils would score the final 11 runs of the game to post an 11-1, five-inning win over the Bluejays to conclude play at the Wilson / DeMarini Invitational.
The Sun Devils (17-1) have now won 13 straight games, sweeping the tournament by out-scoring their opponents 54-2 in five games this weekend. The loss was the fourth straight for Creighton, dropping the Jays to 7-8 on the year.
Arizona State freshman sensation Dallas Escobedo struck out the side in the Creighton half of the first inning and Creighton freshman hurler Becca Changstrom worked around a hit and an error to keep the Sun Devils scoreless in the first. The Bluejays dented the scoreboard in the second inning when Setlik ripped a full count offering from Escobedo over the left center field fence to give the Bluejays a short lived 1-0 lead.
The Sun Devils responded with a four-run bottom half of the second inning, with a three-run home run from Lesley Rogers serving as the key blow in the frame.
ASU tacked on five runs in the third inning, as Bluejay reliever Brittany Telecky struggled to find the strike zone in her first appearance of the weekend. The freshman right-hander faced five batters, but walked four and was responsible for three of the five runs in the inning. Telecky recorded one out before giving way to Kylie Hovinga. The left-hander allowed four straight hits before getting out of the inning with the Bluejays down 9-1.
Changstrom (4-4) took the loss for the Bluejays, as she lasted two innings in the start, allowing four runs and four hits. Sammy Snygg would finish the game in the circle for the Bluejays, retiring the only batter she faced, while giving the Jays four pitchers in the contest. In the entire 2010 season, the Bluejays only used three pitchers.
Escobedo improves to 10-0 in her rookie campaign, as she finished with 11 strikeouts to give her 99 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched this year.
The Jays managed four hits off the ASU ace. Including Setlik's homer, Christa Ruf, Malloree Grove and Jennifer Bohle also collected base knocks in the loss.
Creighton will continue its Spring Break trip with a Tuesday rematch against Arizona State, after a day off on Monday. The Jays and Devils play at 8 pm (CST) on Tuesday, before the Jays travel to another ranked Pac-10 foe, fourth-ranked Arizona for an 8 pm (CST) game with the Wildcats in Tucson.
