TEMPE, Ariz. - Northern Iowa handed the Creighton softball team a 5-3 loss Saturday afternoon at the Wilson / DeMarini Invitational hosted by Arizona State. UNI was ahead 3-0 after two innings, before the Bluejays tied the game 3-3 with a three-run top of the fifth inning keyed by Brittnie Kreiser's first career home. A two-run home run by the Panthers in the bottom of the fifth helped snap a 12-game Bluejay winning streak in the series with the Panthers.
UNI (8-5) scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run home run off the bat of Rachel Gerking. The Panthers tacked on another run in the second inning as a pair of walks set up an RBI single from Hannah Borschel.
The score would remain 3-0 in favor of the Panthers until the fifth inning, when a pair of UNI errors helped the Bluejays pull even. Christa Ruf reached on a fielder's choice and would later score from third base when Amy Baker's smashed a ball that UNI shortstop Whitney Plein mishandled. Kreiser followed by connecting for a two-run home run to deep center field to tie the game at 3-3.
The Panthers wasted no time in getting their lead back, as Eranne Daugharthy ripped a two-run home run over the left center field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning to provide what turned out to be the difference in the game.
Sammy Snygg (0-3) took the loss for the Bluejays, as she lasted 4.2 innings. The sophomore right-hander allowed five hits, five earned runs, walked five and struck out four in the loss.
Daugharthy (1-0) would pick up the win for UNI, tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Five of Creighton's six hits in the game came from freshmen, including a 2-for-3 game from Malloree Grove, to push her team-best average to .343 on the season.
Creighton (7-7) concludes play at the tournament on Sunday afternoon when it plays a 2 pm (CST) game against the hosts, ninth-ranked Arizona State.
