TEMPE, Ariz. - Bluejay freshman Brittany Telecky struck out five and allowed only one run in relief, but the Creighton softball team lost 10-0 at eighth-ranked Arizona State Tuesday night. The Sun Devils captured their 14th straight win, while handing the Bluejays their fifth straight loss at Farrington Stadium.
After Creighton (7-9) went down in order in the top of the first inning, Arizona State (18-1) scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. The Sun Devils took advantage of an error by Jennifer Bohle and with two outs got a three-run home run off the bat of Annie Lockwood to take the lead.
Arizona State tacked on seven runs in the bottom of the second inning, chasing Bluejay starter Sammy Snygg after she allowed consecutive one-out, two-run singles. Telecky relieved, allowing two hits and two inherited runners to score, while allowing one run of her own to put the Bluejays behind 10-0 after two innings.
After allowing two hits in her first inning of work, Telecky settled in and did not allow a base hit in the third or fourth inning, while keeping the high-powered ASU offense from adding to its 10-0 lead. The rookie right-hander struck out the side in the third inning and added two more strikeouts in the fourth to log five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work against the nationally-ranked foe.
Creighton's only hit in the game came when Ellen Homan smacked the first pitch she saw in the fourth inning to left field.
Mackenzie Popescue (5-1) picked up the win for Arizona State, tossing the five-inning, one-hit shutout. The right-hander struck out seven and walked one in the complete game effort.
Snygg (0-4) lasted 1.1 innings, allowing six earned runs in the loss. The sophomore alllowed five hits, walked three and struck out two.
Following consecutive games at nationally-ranked Arizona State, the Bluejays now travel to play at fourth-ranked Arizona on Wednesday at 8 pm (CST).
