DENTON, Texas - Alexis Cantu homered and picked up the win in the circle as the Creighton softball team defeated Northern Illinois 5-1 Sunday morning to conclude play at the rain-shortened Fairfield Inn & Suites Classic hosted by North Texas. Cantu launched a three-run home run in a four-run first inning and went four innings to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Creighton improved to 7-0 with the win, its best start since the 1987 team set a school-record by winning 10 straight games to start the season. The win was CU's second over NIU on the weekend, dropping the Huskies to 3-5 on the year.
Just as she has done all season, freshman Allie Mathewson got the Bluejay offense started in the first inning, singling to start the game. She moved to second on a bunt single by Ellen Homan and scored on an RBI single by Amy Baker. Cantu, a sophomore transfer from UT Arlington, followed with her first home run as a Bluejay, giving the Jays a 4-0 lead after four hitters.
NIU would not get on the board until the fourth inning, plating a run on an RBI double by Carly Norton.
The Jays regained their four-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Cantu doubled to start the inning. Ashley Frutos pinch-ran for Cantu and would score the final run of the game on a passed ball.
Becca Changstrom pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the save for the Bluejays, her first of the year and second of her career. The game was called after six innings due to a time limit placed before the game due to NIU's travel arrangements.
Cantu (2-0) allowed five hits and one runs, walking two and striking out two to pick up the win. The Texas native finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run and three RBI.
Mathewson went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Bluejays, raising her average to .452 on the year.
Norton led NIU with three of the Huskies eight hits. NIU stranded seven runners in the loss.
The Bluejays will look to stay perfect on the season when they travel to Louisville (9-0) to play a three-game series with the nationally-ranked Cardinals next weekend. CU and 21st-ranked Louisville will play a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
