Softball Ties School Record in 19-4 Win Over Howard

TEMPE, Ariz. - Each of Creighton's four freshmen collected three hits in the softball team's 19-4 win over Howard Sunday afternoon at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational. Creighton tied a school record with 22 hits in the win which snapped a five-game losing streak.
Creighton (8-5) scored seven runs in the first inning against the 1-11 Bison. Allie Mathewson and Ellen Homan smacked back-to-back singles to start the game and Mathewson scored the first run of the contest on an RBI single from Amy Baker. Alexis Cantu walked to load the bases and Homan then scored on a single by Bri Lingl. Taylor Flodman followed with another run-scoring single to keep the bases loaded for Liz Dike. The Bluejay freshman delivered a three-run triple to give CU a 6-0 lead and she then scored the final run of the frame on an RBI ground out off the bat of Christa Ruf.
The Bluejays exploded again for 10 runs in the second inning. Lingl drove in the first two runs of the frame on a single up the middle. After Ashley Frutos hit one of her two doubles in the game, she and Lingl scored on Flodman's triple. Flodman also scored on the play, crossing the plate on a throwing error by Howard's right fielder. Dike followed with her second home run of the season and CU was up 13-0.
The scoring continued two hitters later, when Mathewson connecting for her first career home run, driving in Ruf on the blast. Homan followed with a single and she scored on Baker's first homer of the season and the 34th of her career.
Howard's Lorae Robinson put the Bison on the board with a solo home run in the third inning and Howard also sent a solo shot out in the fourth inning to make the score 17-2.
A Flodman RBI double and an RBI single by Blair Lowe in the top of the fifth inning concluded scored for the Jays.
Sammy Snygg (3-1) allowed just two hits, both solo homers, in four innings pitched to earn the victory.
Freshmen Mathewson, Lingl, Flodman and Dike each had three hits and scored at least two runs in the game. Mathewson was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and a home run, while the other three each finished 3-for-4. Flodman and Dike both collected four RBI, and Lingl had three RBI.
Baker, Homan and Frutos all had multi-hit games as well as the Jays tied the school record for hits in a game originally set at Drake on April 9, 2002. CU's 19 runs rank second in school history, trailing only the school record 20 scored against the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) on Feb. 9, 2000.
