DAKOTA DUNES, S.D. -- Creighton senior Johnny Spellerberg needed five holes to win a three-way playoff and take home medalist honors at the USD Coyote Classic on Tuesday.
A Fremont native, Spellerberg finished with a par on the fifth playoff hole to take the crown. Spellerberg (74+70+79) won the playoff over Green Bay's Gene Kiela III after they moved to hole No. 9 after four previous times playing No. 18. North Dakota's Jacob Dehne bowed out after the second playoff hole.
Spellerberg became the first Creighton men's golfer to win a tournament with five or more teams since John Sutko won the nine-team Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on April 24, 2007.
The Creighton team finished fourth in the eight-team field, but led after 36 holes. The Jays shot a 919 (293+298+328) at the Dakota Dunes Country Club in Dakota Dunes, S.D., while enduring windy and rainy conditions.
Omaha finished first in the team scoring with a three-round total of 908 (296+300+312). North Dakota State placed second with a 910 (295+305+310) and South Dakota carded a 912 for third on the par-72 6,788 yard course.
Creighton freshman Jonah Buss tied for fourth with a 224 (70+73+81), sophomore Kade Brown totaled 234 and tied for 23rd, freshman Trey Pettit tied for 38th with a 242, and junior Steffen Lake placed 45th with a 256 (85+88+83).
The Jays return to the links Oct. 12-14 at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Overland Park, Kan.
