Fresno, Calif. - For the second consecutive day the Creighton Baseball team came up just a bit short, falling 2-1 to Fresno State on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 0-2 on the season, while Fresno State moved to 2-0.
Creighton earned the first opportunity of the afternoon when junior Nicky Lopez ripped a one-out triple down the left field line. The Bluejays, however, were unable to convert.
Fresno State took advantage with single runs in the second and the fourth innings to build a 2-0 edge.
Creighton finally got on the board in the top of the seven as senior Brett Murray opened the frame with a single up the middle. He took second via a passed ball and went to third on freshman catcher Michael Emodi's single to left. With one down and runners at the corners, junior Daniel Woodrow plated Murray via an RBI ground out.
Still down 2-1 in the top of the ninth, the first two Bluejays went down quickly against Fresno State closer Tim Borst. Emodi and Woodrow put runners at the corners, then junior Nicky Lopez worked a walk to load the bases. The boyhood dream scenario went the Bulldogs way as senior Ryan Fitzgerald struck out on three pitches to send the Bluejays to a second 2-1 loss.
Sophomore Rollie Lacy delivered a strong first outing of the season, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings in the loss (0-1). Lacy struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Fresno State's Jimmy Lambert (1-0) limited Creighton to one run on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Lambert did not walk a Bluejay, recording one strikeout along the way.
Offensively the Bluejays were led by freshman Michael Emodi's three hit day. Emodi closed the game 3-for-3, while Daniel Woodrow and Harrison Crawford each had two hits.
Creighton and Fresno State wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, Feb. 21. First pitch is set for 3:05 pm.
