Baseball Completes Sweep of UAB with 4-3 Win

Bluejays have won nine of their last 10 games and improve to 9-4
The win pushed Creighton's record on the season to 9-4, while UAB fell to 6-9.
Creighton had to play from behind for the second straight day after UAB scored twice in the top of the first to chase Bluejay starter Austin Groth after one-third of an inning. Jeff Albrecht came in out of the pen to minimize the damage as CU trailed 2-0 before coming to the plate.
A one-out double by Ryan Fitzgerald started the Bluejay attack in the bottom of the first frame, and he would come around to score when Reagan Fowler ripped a double into the right-field corner.
Back-to-back doubles by Brett Murray and Harrison Crawford, followed by a two-run single from Daniel Woodrow, helped stake Creighton to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning against UAB starter Austin Thomas (0-2).
The Jays tacked on an insurance tally in the bottom of the fourth when Kevin Connolly tripled and scored on a sac fly from Keith Oren.
The Blazers answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning against Ethan DeCaster before John Oltman escaped a jam to preserve the Bluejay lead.
David Gerber earned his fourth save of the young season with a scoreless ninth. His 13 career saves rank ninth in school history, tying him with Chris Ringleb, Pat Venditte and Bryan Sova. He was the last of seven pitchers on the day for Creighton, which once again had a brilliant weekend from its bullpen. The Bluejay bullpen threw 14.2 innings on the weekend, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out eight.
Albrecht (1-0) earned the win for Creighton, throwing 4.1 scoreless innings of one-hit ball, in his longest outing in exactly one year (4.2 innings on March 13, 2015 vs. Utah Valley).
The Bluejay offense saw seven different men record exactly one hit, part of an output that included five doubles and a triple.
Creighton returns to action next Friday when it continues its 11-game homestand with a 6:30 pm game against North Dakota at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
