Jays remain in second place in the BIG EAST
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Softball team finished off a weekend sweep of visiting Georgetown with a 6-2 win over the Hoyas on Sunday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
Creighton improved to 22-12 and is in second place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 6-1 league mark. The Hoyas fell to 7-26 on the year and are 1-7 in league play.
The Bluejays wasted no time getting ahead, as two walks and an error loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first inning. Samantha Giovanniello struck out the next two batters before Mileah McKelvy drove a single to left to bring home Michelle Trulin with the game's first run.
Georgetown answered in the top of the third inning, as Olivia Russ homered to left-center for her first round tripper of the year.
Creighton took the lead back in the bottom half of the frame. Allie Reinhart walked with one out and moved to second on an infield single. Anna O'Gorman singled to load the bases, and the Jays took the lead when Reinhart coasted home on a sacrifice fly by McKelvy. The Jays made it 3-1 when Jen Daro scored after Aujanae McCoy's grounder to shortstop left Russ indecisive on where to throw the ball.
Trulin started the Bluejay rally in the fourth, as well, reaching on a ground-rule double to open the inning. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tash Coffiel before coming home to score on an RBI groundout by Reinhart, making it 4-1.
CU piled on two more runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of some wildness from Giovanniello. Trulin walked on five pitches with the bases loaded to force in O'Gorman, and Coffiel followed with a four-pitch walk to plate McCoy.
Georgetown did get one run back in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Sarah Bennett to score Giovanniello, but that would be it.
Micaela Whitney won her third straight start and fifth straight decision to improve to 6-4 on the year. She allowed five hits, two runs and walked one while striking out six in an efficient outing that required just 89 pitches.
Five Bluejays had one hit each, with Trulin setting the table at the top of the order. The senior was 1-for-2 with an RBI and walked twice while also scoring two times. McKelvy finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Giovanniello (6-17) suffered the loss for the Hoyas, throwing 151 pitches and surrendering five hits, six runs (four earned) and seven walks while also recording seven strikeouts.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday with a 4 pm game at Drake before returning home to host Iowa State at 4 pm on Wednesday afternoon.
