Rogalla shines and bullpen comes up big in the ninth inning
OMAHA, Neb. -- Keith Rogalla threw eight innings of one-run ball and the Bluejay bullpen escaped a ninth-inning jam to clinch a series victory over Jacksonville with a 2-1 win on Sunday, April 3rd.
The win pushed Creighton's record to 18-6 on the season, while the Dolphins fell to 17-10 overall.
In a 2-1 contest, Jacksonville put men at the corners with no outs in the top of the ninth inning against closer David Gerber via an error and a hit-and-run single through the left side. With the game in the balance, head coach Ed Servais managed his bullpen to perfection to coax out the win. Servais first called upon senior southpaw John Oltman, who came on to strike out Sam Armstrong for the first out. Next senior Connor Miller entered the fray. The Dolphins attempted to bring home the game-tying run with a squeeze play from JJ Gould, but Miller induced two foul balls before recording the second strikeout of the inning. Finally Miller got Nathan Koslowski for the final out on a fly ball to center, giving Creighton and Rogalla the win.
Rogalla and Jacksonville's Spencer Stockton locked horns in a pitcher's duel as each righty retired the first eight hitters in order. Rogalla surrendered the first hit of the game with two down in the top of the third, then easily retired Parker Perez to move to the bottom half. Stockton needed to battle Creighton's Keith Oren to a full count, but sat the Bluejay order down in the third. After an easy top of the fourth for Rogalla, Creighton broke through during the second time through the order.
Junior Daniel Woodrow opened the fourth with solid single to center. Moments later Woodrow forced Stockton into a balk to move to second. Woodrow's speed continued to bother Stockton as an attempted pickoff sailed into center field, moving Woodrow to third. Senior Ryan Fitzgerald made Stockton pay by lacing a double down the right field line. With no outs in the frame, the Bluejays executed by moving Fitzgerald to third with a sacrifice by Nicky Lopez and a sac fly off the bat of Reagan Fowler.
Staked to a 2-0 lead, Rogalla cruised through flawless frames in the fifth and sixth and worked around two hits in the seventh to maintain a 2-1 advantage. Rogalla continued his dominance in the eighth, holding the Dolphins to a single to set up the dramatic finish in the ninth. Rogalla moved to 3-1 on the season with the win, allowing one run on four hits as he tied a career-high of eight innings. Miller picked up his second save of the year with the final two outs of the ninth. Stockton was the tough-luck loser (3-2), yielding two runs on four hits in eight innings.
Creighton has now won six straight series, and 18-of-20 games to improve to 18-6 overall. Jacksonville falls to 17-10 with the setback.
The Bluejays do not have a midweek contest as Creighton will return to the diamond on Friday, April 8 as the Bluejays open BIG EAST play with a critical series against Seton Hall. Friday's contest will begin at 6:30 pm.
