Woodrow's Blast and Lacy's Arm Give Baseball Series Opener at Xavier, 4-2

Cincinnati, Ohio -- The first career home run from junior Daniel Woodrow and eight strong innings by ace Rollie Lacy helped the Creighton Baseball team secure the series opener at Xavier, 4-2, on Friday, May 13.
The victory gives the Bluejays a 11-2 record in BIG EAST play and moved Creighton to 33-11 on the season. Xavier, meanwhile, fell to 22-27 overall and 9-4 in conference action.
With two down in the top of the third, Xavier starter Zac Lowther had faced the minimum eight Bluejay hitters. Freshman catcher Michael Emodi changed that by working a five-pitch walk to turn over the lineup for junior Daniel Woodrow. The speedy center fielder made the walk hurt as Woodrow yanked a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for his first career home run to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead.
Xavier scratched across single runs in both the fourth and fifth frames on a sac fly from Nate Soria in the fourth and a two-out RBI knock by Joe Gellenback in the fifth.
The 2-2 was short extremely short lived as Woodrow got the advantage back in the top of the sixth. Woodrow worked a one-out walk, followed by another free pass issued to junior Nicky Lopez to put Woodrow in scoring position. Senior Ryan Fitzgerald plated Woodrow rifling a 3-1 pitch into center.
The Bluejays tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth as senior Reagan Fowler led off with a single, moved to third on consecutive ground outs and scored via a wild pitch.
Back on top, Lacy took matters into his own hands as he retired the final ten Musketeers that he faced. The right-hander's streak began when Lacy stranded two Xavier runners with a strikeout of Andre Jernigan to end the fifth. He went on to strike out the side in the sixth and punched out one in both the seventh and eighth frames to move to 9-2 on the season. Lacy's final line showed he allowed two runs on five hits and three walks in eight innings, finishing with a season-high seven strikeouts. Senior David Gerber worked around two hits in ninth to pick up his BIG EAST leading tenth save of the season.
Fowler closed the game with two hits, while Woodrow was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Creighton and Xavier will continue the three-game series on Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm.
