Creighton vs. Wichita State Series (Shockers lead, 114-47-1)
Tuesday gives the Bluejays a chance to renew an old MVC rivalry as Creighton faces Wichita State in a mid-week battle.
The Shockers held a hearty lead on the Bluejays in the overall series, but under head coach Ed Servais Creighton has faired bettter (down just 25-16).
Wichita State won the last two meetings, taking the series finale against Creighton in 2013 as well as a battle in the Missouri
Valley Conference Tournament that year.
Scouting the Shockers (2016: 17-31, 7-8 MVC)
Tuesday's game figures to be a battle heavily reliant on offense as Wichita State sends Codi Heuer (8.24 ERA) out for his first start of the season.
The Shockers enter Tuesday's contest with a .283 average, including seven hitters over .290. Trey Vickers (.315) and Greyson
Jenista (.314) lead the way for Wichita State.
On the bump the Shockers have struggled, posting a team ERA of 6.20. Five different hurlers have at least one save for Wichita State, while the team leader John Hayes has three.
Creighton vs. Xavier Series (Bluejays lead, 8-2)
Entering just the third series as new members of the BIG EAST, the Bluejays and Musketeer series has already offered intense meetings.
In 2013 the two teams met five times, during the first three in Cincinnati the Bluejays dropped the opening game then took the final two to claim the series.
Creighton hoisted its first regular-season BIG EAST championship in the final contest at Xavier. The two teams met again in the opening game of the BIG EAST Tournament, a Bluejay win. Three days later the Musketeers won the BIG EAST Tournament championship to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Last season the Bluejays swept Xavier in three contests at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
Scouting the Musketeers
(2016: 22-26, 9-3 BIG EAST)
After opening the season 14-26 and 1-3 in BIG EAST play, it would have been easy for the Musketeers to write off the 2016 season. Instead they've rattled off eight straight wins and eight straight wins in BIG EAST play to move into second place.
Xavier's rally began by taking the final two games from St. John's in late April. That was also the last time the Musketeers played at home. Xavier went on to sweep consecutive road series at Butler and at Seton Hall to move within a game of the Bluejays.
On the season Xavier is hitting .250, but those numbers move up to .264 in BIG EAST play. Nate Soria boasts a .372 average in conference play, while Chris Givin is
hitting .357 in 12 conference contests.
On the bump Xavier has a team ERA of 4.67 overall and 3.71 in conference play. Closer Garrett Schilling has been a large reason for the Musketeers success in BIG EAST play, with a 1.67 ERA and 10 saves on the season. He has five saves in conference play and a 2.19 ERA.
Raising the Stakes
With just two series remaining in the regular season, the Bluejays series with the Musketeers could very well decide the regular-season title.
Creighton enters the weekend with a one-game lead at 10-2. The Bluejays have not lost a BIG EAST series, while Xavier's only loss came to Georgetown (2-1).
First Goal Reached
Entering the 2016 season the Bluejays mapped out a series of goals. With Saturday's 4-0 win over Georgetown, Creighton achieved the first one, claiming a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Creighton is the first team to earn one of the four slots in the tournament.
More Bonding on the Bus
Head coach Ed Servais believes there is more to a successful team than just talent. One key ingredient is bonding as a unit. The Bluejays often try to take time to come
together as one group, 2016 is no exception.
Early this season the Bluejays bused from Omaha to Murray, Kentucky in March for a three-game set with Murray State. The bus tour continued to Lawrence, Kansas for a single-game with the Jayhawks on March 8 and to Manhattan, Kansas to face Kansas State on March 9 before returning home.
The team spent 19 hours on a bus together.
10 Hours:Â Â Â Omaha to Murray
3 Hours:Â Â Â Â Â Â Murray to Lawrence
3 Hours:Â Â Â Â Â Â Lawrence to Manhattan
3 Hours:Â Â Â Â Â Â Manhattan to Omaha
This week the Bluejays are at it again, busing to Wichita for a single game against the Shockes on Tuesday, May 10. Creighton will then board the bus once again en route to Cincinnati, Ohio for a three-game set with Xavier. The total trip will be 28 hours.
4.5 Hours:Â Â Â Omaha to Wichita
12.5 Hours:Â Â Â Wichita to Cincinnati

Bluejays vs. BIG EAST, 15-0-1

Creighton has won 15 series and tied one last season, including six sweeps (3-0) of conference foes. The Bluejays overall record against BIG EAST opposition is 37-10 in the regular
season.
Six of the Bluejays' 10 losses in conference action have come in the series opener.
