Omaha, Neb. -- Behind a career-high seven shutout innings from junior Jeff Albrecht, the Creighton Baseball team clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with a 4-0 win over Georgetown on Saturday, May 7.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 32-9 on the season and 10-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown fell to 23-26 overall and 6-8 in conference action.
Albrecht limited the Hoyas to just two hits and two walks in seven innings of work to move to 6-0 on the season. The southpaw did not allow Georgetown to get more than one man on in an inning and never allowed a runner past second in the contest.
Offensively the Bluejays gave Albrecht a 2-0 lead with single runs in both the second and the fourth frames.
Creighton's first run was of the manufactured variety as senior Reagan Fowler walked, then senior Matt Gandy followed with a sharp single to right to put runners at first and second. Senior Brett Murray lifted a deep fly ball into center, allowing Fowler to move to third. Finally senior Harrison Crawford grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop, beating the relay throw by two steps.
Gandy was also involved in the Bluejays' second run, stroking a one-out single to left-center and scoring on an RBI single from Crawford in the fourth.
An eventful bottom of the eight saw Creighton tack on two more runs as junior Nicky Lopez and senior Ryan Fitzgerald beat out infield singles, then Fowler and Gandy delivered RBI knocks to put the Bluejays' up 4-0. In the inning Georgetown head coach Pete Wilk was ejected for arguing that Lopez was tagged out at second on Fitzgerald's bleeder up the middle.
Senior Nick Highberger tossed the final two frames to pick up his second save of the season.
Gandy and Lopez each closed the night with three hits to lead the offense.
The Bluejays will go for the sweep on Sunday as sophomore Keith Rogalla heads to the mound on Senior Day at 12:00 pm.
