Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Georgetown on Sunday, May 8 as the Bluejays honored their seniors prior to the game.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 32-10 on the season and 10-2 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown moved to 24-26 on the season and 7-8 in conference action.
The Bluejays got out to a strong start with two runs in the bottom of the third. Senior Harrison Crawford opened the frame with a single to left-center. After a wild pitch sent Crawford to second, junior Kevin Connolly reached via a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Connolly quickly swiped second, allowing Creighton to plate two with RBI groundouts from freshman Keith Oren and junior Daniel Woodrow.
Georgetown got on the board in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of an error, a single, a sac bunt and a sac fly to make it 2-1. The scored stayed right there until the top of the seventh, when Richie O'Reilly opened the inning with a single to center and scored via an RBI single to right by Beau Hall.
Knotted 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Bluejays loaded the bags with one-out on singles from seniors Reagan Fowler and Matt Gandy followed by a walk to senior Brett Murray. With the game on the line, Hoyas head coach Pete Wilk turned to reliever Tim Smith. The Georgetown right-hander proved equal to the challenge striking out Crawford and getting Connolly to bounce back to the mound to end the threat.
Still tied heading to the top of the ninth it was O'Reilly once more as the reserve catcher led the inning off with a single to center and scored the game-winning run on a bloop double to left by Hall. O'Reilly scored all three of the Hoyas runs in the contest, while Hall drove him in each time.
Creighton closer David Gerber suffered the loss (3-2), allowing one run on two hits in an inning of work, while Davis collected his third win (3-1) with 1.2 innings of scoreless ball. Georgetown closer David Ellingson worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his tenth save of the season.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday as the Bluejays begin a four-game road week at Wichita State at 6:30 pm.
