Omaha, Neb. -- Just after honoring a quartet of seniors playing their final home weekend series, Creighton Baseball secured a series victory over Cal with a 4-2 win on Friday, May 18.
The win moved the Bluejays to 34-15 on the season, while Cal fell to 29-21 overall.
Despite the win, the Bluejays received disappointing news earlier in the day as a victory by Butler eliminated Creighton from the BIG EAST Tournament.
Cal got on the board first in the top of the second, scoring two runs on a walk, a double and two fielder's choices. Jonah Davis drew a leadoff walk, then one out later Max Flower doubled into left to put runners at second and third. The Golden Bears first run came on a grounder to short by Matt Ruff. Bluejay shortstop Jack Strunc attempted to cut down Flower, but the throw was late. The next hitter, Cameron Eden, hit another RBI fielder's choice to short.
The Bluejays responded immediately in the bottom of the second as Ryan Mantle drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single through the right side. Strunc sacrificed to put two runners in scoring position. Sophomore Jason Allbery followed with a sacrifice fly to center, then freshman Evan Spry lifted an RBI single to right.
Creighton added single runs in the third and the fourth frames. Sophomore Isaac Collins opened the thrid with a single to right center, stole second and scored on an RBI single from junior Mike Emodi.
One inning later junior Thomas Luevano blasted a single through the left side, Strunc sacrificed him to second, then Allbery singled to right to put Bluejays at the corners. Spry continued his hot streak with a sac fly to right to make it 4-2.
While the offense provided a cushion, junior Mitch Ragan worked into the sixth inning to earn the win (6-4). The Omaha native allowed two runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings, while junior Grant Spranger got the final out of the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh.
Sophomore Jonah Smith closed the door for the Bluejays with two innings of scoreless relief for his fifth save of the season.
Creighton and Cal will conclude their series on Sunday, May 19 at 12:00 pm.
