Krapfl's 66 Helps Men's Golf To 10th Place Showing

MADISON, Ill. -- Freshman Ben Krapfl fired an opening-round 66 to help lead the Creighton men's golf team to a 10th place finish at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational, which wrapped up Tuesday at Gateway National Golf Links in Madison, Ill.

Seventeen teams and 96 golfers competed in the event on the par 71 course that measured 7,092 yards and was won by host SIU Edwardsville. The Cougars won by 12 strokes over Nebraska-Omaha after a 10-under aggregate of 842. SIUE's Kyle Slattery took home medalist honors, finishing 10-under par after rounds of 71, 65 and 67 to win by three shots over Nebraska-Omaha's Kevin Gordon.

Krapfl's 5-under 66 on Monday matched the best round by a Bluejay in the last decade, and was last surpassed by John Sutko's 65 in March of 2007. His scorecard included six birdies and one bogey, and tied him for first after 18 holes with Iowa Western's Adam Van Raden. Krapfl ended up tied for 11th in the event after identical 74s to close the tournament.

Brad Keyer tied for 32nd place with rounds of 72, 73 and 76, and Nate Vontz tied for 41st place after loops of 77, 75 and 71. The 71 matched Vontz's best round as a Bluejay.

Freshman Tucker Knaak compiled rounds of 74, 77 and 79 to tie for 73rd place, and Koy Potthoff put together scores of 73, 80 and 79 to tie for 81st place.

Competing as an individual and not factoring into CU's team score was Andrew McCormick. He tied for 27th with circuits of 70, 72 and 77. The first round 70 tied for the second-best collegiate score in 38 rounds as a Bluejay.

Creighton finished 10th in the event despite opening with a 285 that tied the best team score since the third round at the Jackrabbit Spring Invitational on March 17, 2015. CU was in third place after one round before settling for 10th place in the field of 17 teams.

Creighton returns to the course next Monday with the Zach Johnson Invitational in West Des Moines, Iowa.
