Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in its first home game of the season, the Creighton Baseball fell to Nebraska 6-3 on Tuesday, March 26. The loss moved Creighton to 11-6 on the season, while Nebraska climbed to 12-7.
This got off to a quick start for the Jays with Creighton jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame on consecutive doubles from junior Isaac Collins and Will Robertson.
Nebraska responded with two runs in the second off Creighton reliever freshman Dylan Tebrake, then tacked on three more runs in the third inning. The Huskers first two runs came on doubles by Gunner Hellstrom and Angelo Altavilla to open the second and an RBI grounder. Nebraska three-run third came on four singles, a double and a Bluejay pass ball.
The middle innings saw a strong performance on the mound from junior John Sakowski as the Omaha native held the Huskers scoreless for a career-high 3.2 innings.
Creighton inched closer in the eighth with a leadoff single from senior Jack Strunc, followed by an RBI double from junior Parker Upton. The Bluejay rally, however, was cut short by a line drive double play as Nebraska shortstop Altavilla stabbed a liner up the middle with a dive and beat Upton to the bag at second.
Creighton pushed across another run in the ninth on an error and consecutive singles from Strunc and Upton to bring the tying run to the plate, yet the comeback bid ended there.
Nebraska reliever Shay Schanaman picked up the win (1-0) coming on in the fourth with 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Tebrake was tagged with the loss (0-1) for Creighton, allowing four runs on five hits in an inning of work.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Friday, March 29 as the Bluejays begin a three-game series with Illinois State at 6:30 pm.
