OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team used a pair of three-set victories to outlast Air Force, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 4-6 overall, while the Falcons fell to 9-6.
Jose Oscar Diaz secured the match with a three-set victory at the No. 5 slot. Diaz fell behind 5-1 but stormed back for a win during a tiebreaker in the first set, 10-8. Air Force evened the match with a 7-5 win in the second set to force a deciding frame. The Bluejay sophomore went back-and-fourth during the final set before sending a shot cross court in the 10th game to end the match with a 6-4 victory.
Creighton tied the match with a three-set victory at the No. 2 position. Stratton Brown lost by a margin of 6-3 in the first set before battling for a tiebreaker win in the second to force a third. Brown outlasted his opponent 7-5 in the second-set breaker. The junior controlled the third set and won 6-2 to tie the dual at 3-3.
Air Force earned the doubles point with wins at the bottom two positions. Creighton's Nick Campbell and Mac Mease combined for a 6-2 win at the top doubles slot before the Falcons won 6-3 at No. 2 and clinched the first point with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Mease quickly gave Creighton's its first point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Campbell rallied from behind during the No. 1 singles match to give the Bluejays a 2-1 overall advantage. The freshman won 7-5 in the opening set and 6-4 in the second with wins during the final three games.
Air Force countered with straight-sets victories at both the No. 3 and 4 singles matches to regain a 3-2 team lead before Creighton rallied for the come-from-behind victory.
"Today was definitely a gut check for the guys," head coach Tom Lilly said. "After losing the doubles point and some first sets, our guys just willed themselves through tough moments.
"Nick was down in both sets and came back. Mac came through and then it was up to Stratton and Jose to bring some real clutch play and they both did with the match on the line."
Creighton returns to the courts next week in Orlando for matches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
