OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team closed its regular season with a 6-1 loss to DePaul on Sunday at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The Bluejays recognized seniors Claire Embree, Michaela Henne and Ashley Ishimura following the match.
Creighton ended the regular season at 8-12, while the Blue Demons will enter the postseason at 8-11.
The Bluejays' lone victory against DePaul came from freshman Gabby O'Connor at the No. 6 singles position. O'Connor won 6-4, 6-4 for her 10th singles victory of the season.
DePaul opened Sunday's match with wins at the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions to take the doubles point. The Blue Demons defeated Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox 6-2 at the top spot and Creighton's senior duo of Embree and Henne fell 6-3 at the third slot.
Visiting DePaul won in straight-sets at four singles position and earned one victory in three sets. Wilcox forced three sets during the No. 2 set. The Blue Demons earned a tiebreaker win in the first set before the Bluejay freshman won 6-2 in the second frame. In the deciding set, DePaul's No. 2 player claimed a 10-6 win to end the match.
"We ran into a strong team playing with a lot of confidence," head coach Tom Lilly said. "I wish we would have played better doubles but we just didn't execute as well as we are capable of today. Credit to DePaul for winning bigger points in a few singles matches that made the difference."
Creighton returns to the courts for the 2019 BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, South Carolina. Play will begin on Thursday at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
