Women's Tennis Earns No. 7 Seed For BIG EAST Championships, Opens Play Against Providence

Bluejays ended the regular season at 8-12
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team will head to Cayce, South Carolina for the 2019 BIG EAST Tennis Championships presented by Jeep as the No. 7 seed. The Bluejays will play 10th-seeded Providence on Thursday at 9 a.m. Central at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
Creighton ended the regular season at 8-12, including 2-4 against league opponents. The Bluejays' two wins against BIG EAST foes came versus Providence (7-0) in Orlando and Villanova (4-3) in Omaha. The Friars enter the postseason with a 5-17 record (0-6 BIG EAST).Â
Creighton earned a 4-0 sweep of Providence during the 7-10 matchup at the 2018 BIG EAST Championships.
Freshman Sarah Wilcox leads the Bluejays with 18 victories, including nine at the No. 2 singles position and nine at No. 1 doubles while combining with senior Ashley Ishimura. Wilcox is 9-8 this spring in singles and 9-7 during doubles play.
Freshman Gabby O'Connor paces Creighton with 10 singles victories. The Ohio native is 8-4 at the No. 6 position and 2-1 at No. 5. She is also 7-7 during doubles action, including 5-4 since teaming up with Erin Epperson at the beginning of March.
Ishimura claims 15 wins (six in singles, nine in doubles) while playing at the No. 1 singles and doubles slots. The senior owns a 5-5 record during three years of competing at the BIG EAST Championships, which includes a 3-0 mark at last year's event.
Epperson also has 15 victories (nine singles, six doubles) during 2019, while seniors Michaela Henne and Claire Embree have 11 and 10, respectively.
The winner of Thursday's Creighton-Providence match will face second-seeded DePaul on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Central. The Bluejays fell to the Blue Demons, 6-1, during the final match of the regular season on Sunday in Omaha.Â
