Creighton defeated Toledo 24-1 during the first game on Saturday
The Bluejays reversed a 2-0 shutout to the Rockets on Friday with a 24-1 victory on Saturday, while Creighton also fell 5-3 to Texas Southern.Â
The previous Bluejay record for runs in a game was 20 against College of Saint Mary on Feb. 9, 2000.
Creighton jumped out to a 20-0 edge with seven runs in the first inning and 13 in the second frame against Toledo. The 13 runs in the second inning were the most in one inning by a Bluejay squad since also scoring 13 on April 5, 2010 during the bottom of the first inning against North Dakota State.
Individually, Kiara Mills set a Creighton individual single-game high with five runs scored. Ashley Cantu finished 5-for-5 to establish a new career-high and set a new Bluejay record for hits in a game seven innings or shorter, just one shy of the Bluejay overall record of six by Kelly Brookhart during Creighton's 31-inning contest against Utah in May of 1991.
Mills, Cantu and Mikaela Pechar each drove in four runs for the Bluejays, which tied career-highs for all three women.Â
Creighton started its scoring bonanza with seven runs on seven hits and one error during the top of the first frame. After Cantu and Cayla Nielsen led off the game with consecutive singles, Mileah McKelvy attempted to sacrifice the two runners to second and third base. McKelvy laid the bunt down the left side of the infield before the ball ended up down the right-field line on an errant throw, allowing both runs to score and sending McKelvy to third base. Kailey Wilson drove in McKelvy with a single, Mills hit a ground-rule double to produce the fourth run of the game and Pechar hit a two-run homer, Creighton's first home run of 2020. Cantu ended the scoring with a single to center field during her second at-bat in the opening inning.
The Bluejays needed only five hits to produce 13 runs in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from Pechar sent home the first run of the inning, while Alm and Cantu delivered RBI hits. McKelvy drove in the 13th run of the game before three consecutive bases-loaded walks pushed Creighton's edge to 16-0. Pechar produced her second RBI of the inning with a ground out to the pitcher before Kaitlynn Hunt sent home the 18th run of the game with a ground out to second base. Ryann Glenn reached on an error as Mills crossed home plate on the play and Cantu capped the inning with a double down the left-field line as Creighton built a 20-0 lead.
Toledo scored its lone run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
Madeline Vejvoda and Nielson each tallied RBI singles in the fourth inning. Vejvoda's single to center field drove in Mills and set the program record with Creighton's 21st run.Â
Mills ended the scoring with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth following a pinch-hit single during Saren Croker's first career plate appearance.
Freshman Haley Gatica recorded the victory in the circle during her first start as a Bluejay. The Iowa native allowed four hits and one unearned run during the complete game five-inning effort.
Fourteen different Creighton players scored, including seven that scored more than once. The Bluejays also recorded 18 hits, which is tied for the fourth-best single-game mark in program history.
In the second game of the day, Creighton built a 2-0 lead with solo home runs by Nielson and Victoria Alvarez, but Texas Southern scored the next five runs of the contest.
The Tigers scored twice in the third, once in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning to build a 5-2 advantage.
Creighton attempted to rally in the last of the seventh. Pechar led off the frame with a double to left field. Pinch-runner Courtney Sandell moved to third base on an infield single by Cantu before Nielson drove in Sandell with a double down the left field line. The Bluejays stranded the tying run at second base to end the game.
Cantu, Nielson and Sam Alm each had two hits against Texas Southern as the Bluejays produced 10 hits.
Creighton concludes its weekend in San Antonio with a single game on Sunday morning against Incarnate Word. First pitch between the Bluejays and host Cardinals is set for 10:30 a.m.
