Creighton places ninth in first event in nearly a year
LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- A 19th-place showing by Nate Vontz led the Creighton men's golf team to a ninth-place finish at the Southern Invitational at the team's first tournament in nearly a year.
The tournament took place at The Falls Club in Lake Worth, Fla., and was played on a par 72 course that measured 6,757 yards. It was CU's first event since the Orlando Invitational on March 9-10, 2020.
A junior from Lincoln, Vontz had Creighton's best round of the tournament with an opening-round 69 before wrapping up with rounds of 76 and 72 for a 217 total. He now owns 13 career rounds of par or better in his career
Sophomore Cade McCallum tied for 34th place with circuits of 75, 77 and a collegiate-low of 71 for a 223 total.
Creighton also had three freshmen make their collegiate debuts.
Charlie Zielinski sandwiched a 77 between an even-par 72 in his first and third rounds to tie for 31st place. Jackson Thompson placed 55th after loops of 76, 75 and 81. Not to be forgotten Jake Kluver had rounds of 75, 78 and 82 to tie for 59th place.
Competing as an individual but not counting towards CU's team score was junior Brandt Radloff (82-77-75) with a 234 total.
Campbell's Pontus Nyholm (73-70-64) fired a final-round 64 to finish 9-under par (207) to defeat VCU's Peter Gasperini (71-69-68) by one shot for medalist honors in the 69-player field. Middle Tennessee (281-291-271) won the team title by nine shots over Mercer and VCU with a 21-under par aggregate of 843.
Creighton returns to the course on March 15-16 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz.
