Blue Demons scored eight runs in the fourth inning
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The Creighton softball team fell 10-2 in five innings to DePaul during the series finale on Sunday in Chicago.
The Bluejays dropped to 8-7 in BIG EAST play and 13-11Â overall, while the Blue Demons improved to 10-1 in league action and 19-9 overall.
DePaul scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 2-2 tie and pull away. The Blue Demons posted five hits in the inning, including a two-out grand slam from Nicole Sullivan.Â
Creighton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first frame. Brittney Manthie led off the game with a walk during her first start as the Bluejays' lead-off hitter and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cayla Nielsen. Ashley Cantu moved Manthie to third with a ground out to the right side of the infield before Kailey Wilson drove in the first run of the game with an infield single. The Bluejay clean-up hitter sent a pop up towards the left-side of the infield where the DePaul shortstop dove for the ball but could not come up with the catch, which allowed Wilson to reach first and Manthie to cross home plate.
DePaul threatened in the bottom of the opening inning and put runners at second and third with two outs, but Alyssa Gappa made a catch in foul territory along the fence down the third-base line to end the inning.
After Creighton went down quietly in the top of the second, the Blue Demons loaded the bases in the last of the frame. Parker Boyd responded by ending a 10-pitch at-bat with a strikeout to close the frame without allowing a run.
Manthie led off the third by reaching on an error and the Bluejays put runners at second and third with one out for Wilson. The sophomore designated player sent the second pitch she saw towards the shortstop who started a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
DePaul took a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer by Maranda Gutierrez in the bottom of the third.
Creighton tied the game at 2-2 with one run on three hits in the top of the fourth but left the bases loaded. Kiara Mills led off the inning with a single before pinch-runner Jacey Sawyer advanced to third following a sacrifice bunt and ground out. After a four-pitch walk drawn by Gappa, Victoria Alvarez drove in the second Bluejay run with a single up the middle. Manthie singled to load the bases before DePaul made a pitching change and ended the inning with a fielder's choice.
The Blue Demons loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth before a line drive came back and hit Boyd in the left wrist, which allowed a run to score and forced a pitching change. Mikayla Santa Cruz recorded the second out of the inning with a fielder's choice to third as DePaul extended its lead to 4-2. Santa Cruz proceeded to load the bases and force in a run with consecutive four-pitch walks before a hit by pitch gave the Blue Demons a four-run edge. The sophomore reliever produced a 1-2 count on Sullivan before the DePaul third baseman lifted the next delivery over the left-field wall to clear the bases and push the home team ahead by eight runs, 10-2.
Cantu walked and Wilson hit an infield single to start the top of the fifth. Madeline Vejvoda nearly pulled the Bluejays within five runs with a three-run homer to left, but the DePaul left-fielder crashed into the wall and caught the ball above the yellow line. With runners at second and third, a strikeout ended the game.
Creighton tallied seven hits but left eight runners on base. Wilson led the Bluejays with two hits and six other players had one each. Manthie reached all three times with a walk, error and single during her first game as the Bluejay lead-off hitter.
Creighton returns to Omaha and will head across the city to Connie Claussen Field on Wednesday afternoon for a contest against UNO. First pitch between the Bluejays and Mavericks is scheduled for 4 p.m.
