Charlie Zielinski and Nate Vontz both finish in top-seven
MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Charlie Zielinski tied for second place and the Creighton men's golf team finished fourth at the season-opening Wildcat Invitational on Tuesday.
Zielinski had eight birdies en route to an opening-round 67, then followed that with a one-under 71 to own a three-shot lead heading into Tuesday's final round. The sophomore from Omaha was quickly caught by eventual medalist George Clarke from Kansas City, who birdied six of the first eight holes in his final round and finished with a final-round 67.
Zielinski's 67 on Monday was the best round of his collegiate career and helped secure his second top-10 finish. He tied for second place with Sam Houston's Chad Sewell, two shots behind Clarke.
Senior Nate Vontz placed seventh following loops of 70, 74 and 73 for a 217 total. He has now finished in the top-11 in each of his last six tournaments dating to last spring.
Cade McCallum had Creighton's best round on Tuesday with a two-under 70 that featured four birdies. The junior began his fall with rounds of 76 and 77 and tied for 18th place overall.
Jackson Thompson had rounds of 77, 76 and 82 and tied for 49th place in the first competition of his sophomore campaign.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was sophomore Jake Kluver, who compiled rounds of 83, 76 and 80 for a 239 total. He tied for 60th place.
The competition was held at Colbert Hills Golf Club, which measured 7,525 yards and played to a par 72. The tournament included 75 players and 13 teams, with Sam Houston winning the team title after an even-par 864 total to edge host Kansas State by nine shots.
Creighton's 884 total was its best in a season-opening event since the 2017-18 team debuted with an 880 at the UNO Invitational. Additionally, the fourth-place showing matched the program's best mark in three seasons under head coach Judd Cornell.
Creighton returns to the course on Sept. 20-22 at Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo.
