Bluejay Baseball Suffers Sweep in Doubleheader at Portland

Portland, Ore. -- The Creighton Baseball team continued to scuffle on Saturday, February 19, dropping a pair of seven-inning games to Portland. The Bluejays fell 12-1 in the opener and dropped a 4-3 decision in the second game.
Following Saturday's action, Creighton fell to 0-3, while Portland climbed to 3-0.
Game 1: Portland 12, Creighton 1
Portland jumped on the Bluejays early, scoring eight runs in the first three frames to grab control.
Creighton's lone tally came in the fourth as junior Andrew Meggs plated freshman Nolan Sailors with a RBI double in the fourth.
Bluejay starter Cade Lommel struggled with his control as the southpaw allowed four runs on two hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. Lommel took the loss (0-1), while Portland starter Brock Gillis picked up the win (1-0) with four innings of one-run ball.
Sophomore Alan Roden closed the game 3-for-3 in the loss. Â
Game 2: Portland 4, Creighton 3
The Bluejay offense got off to a quick start in the second game, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Meggs drew a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch. Roden plated Meggs with an RBI single to center, then quickly stole second. Junior Jared Wegner pushed Creighton out to a 2-0 edge with an RBI double to left.
Portland, however, answered with a two-run blast by Briley Knight in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 2-2.
Creighton immediately reclaimed the lead in the second as Sailors lined a double to right, went to third on a wild pitch and scored via an RBI infield single from freshman Hogan Helligso.
The score remained 3-2 into the fifth inning as Creighton starter Hudson Leach held the Pilots in check for 3.2 innings. Junior reliever Paul Bergstrom got the final out of the fourth, but surrendered a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take the loss (0-1).
Portland starter Brett Gillis (1-0) captured the win, holding Creighton to three runs on seven hits over five innings, while Peter Allegro earned his first save with two innings of scoreless ball.
Wegner and Sailors led the Creighton offense with two hits each in the second game.
Creighton and Portland will wrap up the series on Sunday, February 20 at 2:00 pm (CT).
