Portland, Ore. -- In spite of a three-run rally in the ninth, Creighton Baseball fell to Portland 6-5 in the series finale on Sunday, February 20.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 0-4 on the season, while Portland climbed to 4-0.
As the Pilots did throughout the series, Portland jumped on the Bluejays early scoring on in the first and two runs in the second.
Junior Andrew Meggs got Creighton on the board with a solo home run in the third, but Portland answered with a pair of runs in the fifth to hold a 5-1 edge.
Creighton's second tally of the day came in the seventh as freshman Nolan Sailors laced a one-out single up the middle. The Bluejay designated hitter moved to second on a sac bunt and scored thanks to an RBI double from junior Jack Grace.
Portland pushed across a pivotal insurance run in the eighth, converting an error via an RBI double from Sam Brown.
In the ninth Creighton got things rolling as junior Sterling Hayes and senior Chris Esposito drew walks. One out later pinch hitter Brant Voth blasted a three-run home run over the center field wall to bring the Bluejays within a run at 6-5. Pinch hitter Tate Gillen kept things moving as he reached on an error, but a strikeout by Meggs and a fly out from sophomore Kyle Hess.
Bluejay starter Dominic Cancellieri took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in three innings. Portland starter Caleb Franzen picked up the win (1-0), limiting Creighton to one run on four hits in 4.1 frames. Peter Allegro collected his second save of the season, despite allowing three runs on two walks and one hit in two innings.
Eight different Bluejays collected one hit in the game, highlighted by the home runs off the bats of Meggs and Voth.
