Campbell Leads Men's Golf To Ninth Place at Loyola Intercollegiate

Kansas transfer finishes 2-under par in his second tournament as a Bluejay
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Kansas transfer Shaun Campbell tied for 18th place with a 2-under 214 to help the Creighton men's golf team to a ninth place finish at the Loyola Intercollegiate in Goodyear, Ariz.
Campbell shot a 73 in the first round and it only got better from there as he followed with scores of 72 and 69 for a 214 total.
Charlie Zielinski compiled scores of 72, 71 and 73 for a 216 total to finish at even par. He tied for 31st place overall and now has posted 39 straight rounds in the 60s or 70s since enrolling at CU, including 14 rounds of par or better.
Nate Vontz posted back-to-back 75s to open the tournament before shooting a team-best 68 in the final round. The Lincoln native's 218 total tied him for 42nd place, which snapped a streak of 10 straight top-11 finishes. His final round 68 was his 30th career round of par or better and eighth of his senior season.
Cade McCallum also improved each day, starting with a 75 before finishing with loops of 74 and 71 to tie for 51st with a 220 aggregate.
Rounding out CU's team scoring was Jackson Thompson's 221 total which placed him in a tie for 58th. He shot rounds of 75, 73 and 73.
Freshman Owen Mackin was CU's best golfer each of the first two circuits after consecutive 71s, but was entered as an individual and didn't factor into CU's team scoring. He finished with a 79 in the last round to match Thompson's 58th place finish. Also competing as an individual for CU was Jake Kluver, who shot scores of 77, 79 and 76 to tie for 98th place with a 232 total.
Middle Tennessee State won the tournament with a 29-under par total of 835 (277-281-377), edging out Utah Valley by one shot. MTSU's Kevin Jegers won medalist honors with a 16-under total of 200 following scores of 66, 69 and 65. that was enough to defeat Utah Valley's Joseph Glenn by three shots in the field of 18 teams and 110 competitors. The tournament was held at Palm Valley Golf Club, which measured 7,015 yards on the par 72 layout.
Creighton returns to Arizona for its next tournament, which takes place on March 13-14 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix.
