Chicago, Ill. -- Powered by a 24-12 fourth quarter, the Creighton women's basketball team delivered a 77-68 win at DePaul on Friday, February 4. It was the fourth consecutive road win for the Bluejays in Chicago.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 16-6 on the season and 11-3 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul fell to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
The key to the game was the Bluejays' depth as DePaul won the first and third quarter, but tired in the second and fourth frames.
DePaul raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minute, but Creighton responded with five of their own to knot that game at 5-5 (7:13). Still tied at 14-14 with under two minutes left in the first, DePaul rolled out to a 21-14 edge and took a 21-16 edge into the second quarter.
The Blue Demons pushed their lead out to 25-16 early in the second quarter (8:46). Unphased the Bluejays rallied with 14 of the next 17 points. Creighton's rally began with seven straight on a trey from sophomore Molly Mogensen. Fellow second-year players Emma Ronsiek and Morgan Maly followed with interior buckets to make it 25-23 (6:40).
DePaul's Lexi Held hoped to end the surge with a trey, but Creighton rattled off another seven. This time it was Maly connecting from long range, then sophomore Mallory Brake and Mogensen knocking down buckets to give the Bluejays a 30-28 lead with 4:11 left in the half. Knotted at 34-34 in the closing moments, Ronsiek converted a layup to send Creighton to the locker room with a 36-34 advantage.
Playing just seven players the halftime rest helped DePaul. The Blue Demons reclaimed control, pushing their lead to as much as five at 56-51 with under a minute remaining. Senior Rachael Saunders used her veteran savvy to convert a pair of free throws on the final possession, then converted a driving layup to open the fourth (56-55).
From the final minute of the third through the four minute mark, Creighton outscored DePaul 20-6 to build a 71-62 lead. The Bluejays scored 16 of those 20 points on layups and forced the Blue Demons to shoot 38% in down the stretch.
Ronsiek led Creighton with 23 points, while Mogensen and Jensen closed the game with 11 points. Saunders also reached double-digits with 10 points.
DePaul got a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Aneesah Morrow, while Deja Church had 17 points in the loss.
