Bluejays toss 8.2 innings of scoreless ball in win
OMAHA, Neb. – Sophomore Cade Lommel and junior Marc Lidd tossed 8.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving the Bluejays time to rally as the Creighton baseball team defeated Minnesota 4-2 to complete the weekend sweep over the Golden Gophers on Sunday afternoon at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
The win lifts Creighton to 9-6 on the year, while Minnesota falls to 5-15 overall.
Minnesota jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and chased Bluejay starter Hudson Leach after just three batters in the top the first. Leach plunked Minnesota's Drew Stahl on the first pitch of the game. Stahl then stole second and advanced to third as the throw from catcher Hogan Helligso sailed into centerfield. Stahle come around to score the first run of the game as Brett Bateman lined a single into left field. Bateman would advance to second on a balk before stealing third and later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Chase Stanke, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead.
Both teams would remain scoreless until Creighton plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to even things up at 2-2. Nolan Clifford and Brant Voth work back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, while Andrew Meggs delivered an RBI single into right center, pushing Clifford across the plate for the Bluejays first run of the game. Following a flyout to centerfield by Alan Roden, Jared Wegner was pegged by a pitch to load the bases before Chris Esposito drew a 10-pitch walk pushing Voth across to knot the score up at 2-2.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the eighth, when the Bluejays took advantage of multiple Minnesota pitching miscues. Sterling Hays was hit by a pitch to open the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Kyle Hess was also hit by a pitch. Following a pitching change by the Gophers, Clifford laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into an infield single, loading the bases once again. Voth then stepped up and gave the Bluejays their first lead of the ball game with an RBI groundout to first base. The Bluejays tacked on an additional run when Hess scored on a groundout by Meggs, pushing the Bluejays lead out to 4-2.
Lidd closed the door on Minnesota in the top of the ninth to earn his second win of the season. Lidd tossed three hitless innings for the Bluejays while Lommel pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless ball. Meggs led the Creighton offense with a pair of hits and RBI, while Clifford went 1-for-2 with two walks.
The Bluejays return to action next Friday when they travel to Wichita State. First pitch between the Bluejays and Shockers is scheduled for 6 p.m.
