Mills Walk-Off Double Lifts Bluejays To 7-6 Win Over Providence

Kiara Mills hit an RBI double to the centerfield wall to give the Bluejays a 7-6 win
Creighton improved its overall record to 13-10 and to 3-3 in BIG EAST play, while Providence dropped to 4-4 in league play and 17-9 overall.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sophomore Madeline Vejvoda drew a five-pitch walk to open the innings, before advancing on a single from junior Kailey Wilson and a seven-pitch walk by Mills. Sophomore Emma Rosonke then pushed Vejovda across the first run of the game on an RBI groundout to the second baseman.
Creighton tacked on five additional runs on five hits including back-to-back home runs in the third to extend the lead out to 6-0. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen got things start for the Bluejays with a double down the right field line, before Wilson beat out an infield single. Nielsen came around to score on the very next pitch as Mills lined one through the left side of the infield for the 2-0 lead. The lead grew to five on the very next pitch as Rosonke smacked a three-run home over the right field wall, her second home run of the weekend and her team leading sixth home run of the season, to give the Bluejays a 5-0 lead. The lead got extended to six on the next batter as junior Alyssa Gappa launched her second home run of the season just inside of the left field foul pole.
Providence cut the Bluejays advantage in half as Jacque Harrington hit a three-run home run over the right field wall to cut the Jays lead down to 6-3.
Following a pair of scoreless inning and the Firars down to their final three outs, Providence knotted thing up at six with three runs in the top of the seventh. Kari Shedrick singled up the middle to score one, while Kaelyn Loncharich drew a bases loaded walk to plate one and Lauren Nunez singled to right to tie thing up at 6-6.
With the heart of the lineup due up in the bottom of the seventh, the Bluejays lined back-to-back double to the centerfield wall to escape with the win. Wilson nearly ended it with a double off the top of the wall in center before Mills followed suit with an RBI double to the centerfield wall to push freshman Kate Mason across for the win.
Junior Kate Mullally earned her third win in as many games to move to 3-1 on the year after tossing all seven innings and striking out a career-high eight batter. Jessica Walter's was tagged with the loss after throwing 4.0 innings of relief before the walk-off double by Mills.
Wilson led the Bluejays with three hits, including a double, while Mills went 2-for-2 with the walk-off double and a run scored. Emma Rosonke recorded four RBI with a three-run home run to up her league-best RBI total to. The Bluejays finished the day with seven runs on nine hits, including three doubles and two home runs.
Creighton wraps up their three-game series with Providence tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the CU Sports Complex.
