Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team suffered a second consecutive loss to Arizona on Tuesday, April 19, falling 3-1 to the Wildcats.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 21-10 on the season, while Arizona climbed to 26-12.
Creighton took an early 1-0 lead in the first by manufacturing a run. Leadoff man Andrew Meggs worked a leadoff walk, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Kyle Hess. A wild pitch moved Meggs to third, then sophomore Alan Roden delivered an RBI grounder to make it 1-0.
Each team had chances as the game wore on with the Bluejays stranding 11 runners and the Wildcats leaving 12 on base.
After leaving the bags full in the fifth, Arizona finally pushed across three runs in the sixth. Facing one of Creighton's top relievers, junior Paul Bergstrom, Arizona got a six pitch walk, an 0-2 double into right and an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1. Creighton head coach Ed Servais countered by bringing in junior Tommy Steier. The Wildcats greeted Creighton's closed with an RBI single from Noah Turley. Before the inning was complete the Wildcats added an insurance run on a wild pitch.
Arizona reliever George Arias Jr. picked the win (2-1) with two innings of scoreless relief. Bergstrom suffered the loss (3-2), allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in one-third on an inning.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Friday, April 22 as the Bluejays return to BIG EAST play with a three-game series against Seton Hall in Charles Schwab Field Omaha. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:30 pm.
