Bluejays rally to win 12th straight home game
Omaha, Neb. -- Sophomore Alan Roden went 3-for-4, including a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning as the Creighton Baseball team opened BIG EAST play with an 8-5 win over Georgetown on Friday, April 8th.
Creighton improved to 10-0 at home and is now 16-8 overall (1-0 BIG EAST), while Georgetown dropped to 19-11 and evened its BIG EAST record to 2-2.
Creighton had to overcome a pair of deficits to earn the victory, falling behind 1-0 in the first inning and 4-3 after three frames.
Roden doubled in his first at bat and scored on junior Jared Wegner's single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1 in the first inning.
The Bluejays built a 3-1 lead in the second inning when freshman Brant Voth singled, moved to second on a bunt and later scored on a passed ball. Roden then singled home junior Andrew Meggs with two outs.
The Hoyas took advantage of a pair of walks and consecutive triples in the third inning to score three times to reclaim the lead at 4-3.
The score remained that way until Creighton tied it up in the fifth inning as senior Chris Esposito doubled and later came around to score on junior Jack Grace's double that short-hopped the left fielder.
The Bluejays went ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating three runs on three hits and a wild pitch. Sophomore Nolan Clifford and Meggs started the inning with consecutive singles before both men scored on Roden's double to the gap in right-center. Roden blasted a 3-0 fastball for the two-run knock and later scored on a wild pitch on a strikeout.
Georgetown closed to within two at 7-5 with a run in the seventh, but Wegner pushed the margin back to three (8-5) on a solo home run to left in the eighth.
Creighton starter Dylan Tebrake picked up the win (4-1), allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks in six innings. The tandem of juniors Paul Bergstrom and Tommy Steier closed the door with three innings of scoreless relief, with Steier getting his fifth save of the season.
Georgetown starter Carter Bosch took the loss (3-2), surrendering seven runs on nine hits in five innings.
The Bluejays and Hoyas resume their series on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field Omaha. That game will air on FloSports.
