Bluejays score early and often in 13th straight home win
OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton scored four runs in each of the first two innings, while sophomore Dominic Cancellieri took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Bluejays posted a 12-1 victory over Georgetown on Saturday, April 9 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Cancellieri matched his season-high in strikeouts (8) while dominating on the mound as Creighton won his seventh straight start. He retired the first seven men he faced before a full count walk to Andrew Bergeron in the third inning interrupted his rhythm momentarily. Cancellieri responded by setting down the next 10 men before issuing a full count walk to Jake Hyde with two outs in the sixth. Ubaldo Lopez singled to right-center to break up Cancellieri's no-hit bid before Ethan Stern ruined the shutout with a double into the corner. In all, Cancellieri (3-1) threw 96 pitches and allowed two hits, one run, two walks and struck out eight before giving way to Daniel Hammond.
After scoring seven runs all season in the first inning, Creighton scored four times in the opening frame on Saturday afternoon. Junior Andrew Meggs was hit by a pitch to open the game and moved to second on sophomore Alan Roden's single. One out after a double steal, both men came home on senior Chris Esposito's two-run single. Esposito and junior Jack Grace would score later in the inning on a double into the corner off the bat of freshman Nolan Sailors.
Hoya starter Nolan McCarthy walked sophomore Nolan Clifford and plunked Meggs for the second time before being pulled. Georgetown reliever Andrew Williams allowed an infield single to Roden to load the bases, then forced in a run when he hit Jared Wegner in the foot to make it 5-0. Esposito singled home two more to push the lead to 7-0 before a single from Grace advanced the advantage to 8-0. It marked the first time since April 15, 2003 that Creighton opened a home game with back-to-back innings of four runs or more.
Creighton (17-8, 2-0 BIG EAST) answered Georgetown's single tally with a run in the sixth inning after Esposito reached on a fielders choice, moved to third on a pinch-hit double from sophomore Jack Peluso and scored on an RBI groundout from freshman Brant Voth.
The Bluejays generated a couple insurance runs in the seventh inning as Roden doubled home Clifford, with Meggs scoring on the play after the ball was misplayed by the right fielder. Roden later scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Wegner.
Roden had three hits to lead the offense, while Esposito and Grace each delivered a pair. Meggs and Roden each scored three times in the victory. In addition to Cancellieri, Hammond, Alex Loosbrock and Griffin Holderfield authored scoreless innings in relief.
McCarthy fell to 3-2 after surrendering six runs among the 10 batters he faced in just over one inning of work. He was the first of six Hoya pitchers on the afternoon. The Hoyas, who entered the weekend second nationally with 64 homers and had gone deep in 13 straight contests, were held without a round-tripper for the second straight game and have never homered in 11 games against CU at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Creighton and Georgetown (19-12, 2-3 BIG EAST) will close out the series on Sunday with a game that has been moved to an 11 a.m. Central start and will be broadcast on FloSports.
