Softball Suffers Pair of Losses Against Seton Hall During Saturday Doubleheader

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball both games of a BIG EAST doubleheader against Seton Hall on Saturday at the Creighton Sports Complex in Omaha, Neb. The Pirates won game one 8-2 before claiming a 6-5 win in game two.
The Bluejays suffer their seventh straight loss, moving its record to 13-18 on the year and 0-6 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall improves to 6-3 in league action and 15-10 overall with the pair of victories.
In game one, Seton Hall put the first dent on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the third inning to grab an early 2-0 lead. The Pirates opened the frame with back-to-back singles from Hannah Alexander and Ashly Colonnetta before a sacrifice fly to right by Tylor Hill plated the first run of the game. An RBI double down the right field line by Lela Allen plated Colonnette to give Seton Hall a 2-0 advantage.
The Pirates added to its lead in the top of the fourth as a high fly ball by Alexander got loss in the sun allowing Lauren Caye to score from third.
Seton Hall pushed their advantage out to 7-0 in the fifth as the Pirates scored four runs on three hits and a pair of walks in the frame.
The Pirates lead grew to 8-0 in the top of the sixth before a trio of base knocks by the Bluejays cut the deficit to 8-2. Cayla Nielsen got things rolling with a single to left before back-to-back doubles by Lily West and Madeline Vejvoda made the score 8-2.
Freshman Erika Perez led the Bluejays with a pair of hits, while West collected two hits of her own, including an RBI double. Junior Payton Akers (4-5) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 Seton Hall hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, neither team was able to score in the first two inning of the game before Seton Hall pushed five across in the top of the third inning. The Pirates used four hits, a walk and one Bluejay error to take the early 5-0 lead.
The Pirates would extend its lead out to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning as a trio of walks and an RBI single up the middle by Alexander pushed across another run.
Creighton would not go down quietly as Cayla Nielsen launched a two-run home run over the center field wall to cut into the deficit.
Back-to-back doubles by Kailey Wilson and Emma Rosonke to open the bottom half of the seventh pushed across another Bluejay run cutting the Seton Hall lead down to 6-3. Following a walk to Nielsen and a groundout by West, junior Madeline Vejvoda hit a two-run double off the top of the left field wall to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Nielsen led the Bluejays offense with a pair of hits, including her third home run of the year. Freshman Natalia Puchino suffered the seventh loss of the season allowing six runs, five of which were earned on six Seton Hall hits.
Creighton returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon for a game against former Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake. First pitch between the Bluejays and Bulldogs is set for 4 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex.
