Kailey Wilson's seventh inning homer wins series finale
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A grand slam from Alyssa Gappa and seventh inning homer by Kailey Wilson helped the Creighton Softball team earn a doubleheader split on Sunday. Creighton lost 9-1 in five innings in the resumption of a suspended game before taking the series finale 7-4 at Washington Nationals Youth Academy in Washington, D.C.
Following its series victory, Georgetown is now 13-25 (7-8 BIG EAST) while Creighton is 18-24 (4-11 BIG EAST).
Creighton is back in action on Wednesday at 6 p.m. when it visits Nebraska.
Game 1 (Georgetown 9, Creighton 1 in 5 innings)
In a game suspended by rain in the top of the second inning on Saturday with the Hoyas ahead 2-0, it didn't take long for Creighton to dent the scoreboard. The teams resumed Saturday's contest with Madeline Vejvoda on third base and one out. Three batters later pinch-hitter Ally Dalton singled to drive home Vejvoda from third.
The Hoyas added insurance runs in the third and fourth inning to go up 4-1, then closed out the contest with a five-run fifth inning to walk-off the Bluejays.
Jena Lawrence inherited a two-on, no-out jam in the fifth. One out later, Georgetown's Sophia Scarangella hit a pinch-hit grand slam to end the contest via the league's eight-run rule.
Brooke Plonka (7-9) picked up the complete game victory while Payton Akers (5-6) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) while working into the fifth frame.
CU managed just three hits in the contest, one each from Vejvoda, Dalton and Lily West.
Game 2 (Creighton 7, Georgetown 4)
Creighton picked up its 18th victory of the season with a come-from-behind 7-4 win to close out the series.
Just as it did in the second game of the series, Georgetown scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
After its first nine batters were retired, Creighton did some damage in the fourth frame. Cayla Nielsen walked before Lily West's single chased Hoya starter Kayla Dunn. New hurler Julia Parker allowed a single to Wilson before Gappa's grand slam to center moved the Bluejays ahead, 4-2. It was Gappa's first grand slam of the season and 10th homer overall.
Strong pitching from Natalia Puchino helped keep the Jays in front until the Hoyas put together a two-out rally to tie it in the bottom of the sixth inning. Claire Turner singled and dangerous Cameron Kondo was intentionally walked. Morgan Zamora then tied the game with a triple in the gap in right-center. Bluejay centerfielder Ella Dalton got a glove on the ball but it would drop out as she crashed into the fence as both runners scored.
The Bluejays answered in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally of their own. West worked a full-count walk before Wilson launched the 35th homer of her career to give CU a 6-4 lead. Gappa followed with a double and pinch-runner Mikayla Chairez would come around to score on Vejvoda's double into the right field corner to push the Bluejay edge to 7-4.
Puchino retired the Hoyas in order in the seventh to even her record to 11-11 on the season. She worked around five hits and seven walks to allow just four runs in 135 pitches of her 10th complete game this spring.
Wilson led the Bluejay offense with a 3-for-4 showing, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Gappa drove in four and managed a double and homer in the contest.
