Indianapolis, Ind. -- Battling rain, heavy winds and hail, Creighton Baseball outlasted Butler 6-3 in 11 innings on Sunday, April 30 to sweep the series from the Bulldogs.
The victory pushed the Bluejays into sole possession of first place at 9-3 in BIG EAST action and 22-15 overall. Butler fell to 9-34 on the season and 2-10 in conference play.
Creighton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as sophomore Nolan Sailors and junior Nolan Clifford delivered doubles with Sailors going down the left field line and Clifford lining an RBI knock into right-center.
The Bluejays repeated the trick in the fourth as senior Sterling Hayes doubled to left-center, then sophomore Hogan Helligso poked an RBI double down the right field line to make it 2-0.
Held in check for most of the contest by Bluejay starter Justin Kleinsorge, Butler got on the scoreboard with a single, a sacrifice and an RBI six from Carter Dorighi cutting Creighton's lead to 2-1. In the eighth inning the Bulldogs pulled even with a pair of singles. Senior reliever Marc Lidd shut the door on the Bulldogs in the eighth, only to have rain and lightning delay the game for close to an hour.
Once play resumed in the top of the ninth the Bluejays reclaimed the lead with a single from Sailors, a steal of second and a two-out RBI single from grad transfer Tyler Lozano.
Butler, however, answered in its half with three singles. With Bulldogs on the corners and two down, the Bluejays turned to sophomore reliever Malakai Vetock. The Nebraska native fell behind Joey Urban 3-0 before play was halted by hail. Ten minutes later the two teams returned to the field and Vetock struck out Urban on three pitches to send the game to extra innings.
After a scoreless tenth, the Bluejays delivered the knockout blow with three runs in the eleventh. A pair of one out singles from Sailors and senior Andrew Meggs set the table, then Clifford gave the Bluejays a 4-3 edge with a ground out to second. Lozano and senior Jack Grace provided insurance with an RBI double and RBI single.
Vetock worked around a double in the eleventh to record the win (3-0), holding Butler to one hit in 2.1 innings. Bulldog reliever Dawson Taylor took the loss (2-3) for the second consecutive game, allowing three runs on four hits in one inning of work.
The Bluejays finished the game with 16 hits, including a team-high four from Andrew Meggs. Grace and Sailors each collected three hits in the win, while Clifford and Lozano led the squad with two RBI in the contest.
Creighton returns to the diamond on Friday, May 5 as the Bluejays begin a three-game set with Xavier at Charles Schwab Field at 6:00 p.m.
